While its not an entire multiple hour game like Pixels other game Cave Story, but for a mobile game it is fantastic. The weapons are well made and the damage is really balanced. The level design is great and pulls a Mega Man X and teaches you game mechanics by introducing a harmless challenge, and then implementing the same idea in a more risky, dangerous situation. The game doesnt feel unfair; every challenge is laid out before you, and youre left to figure out the best route. The game doesnt hold your hand and some enemies can be challenging if you dont use the right weapon for the right situation. The challenge is similar to Castlevania; the game follows a completely linear path and has planned enemies at certain points. Theres no RNG that spawns different monsters in different areas, so the game is more about skill and spatial awareness than having to try and get your character as strong as possible to plow through levels. The bosses are interesting and fun, I definitely dont mind losing a few times before I get the pattern down.
Thats really my only complaint, the game is simply too short and there arent too many weapons. The graphics and art are great, and the NPCs are entertaining and have interesting and sometimes comical things to say. The "Presidents" dialogue is great.
I would say if youre looking for an old school experience and you enjoyed Cave Story, youll love this. As well known and loved as Cave Story is, Im a fan but dont consider it one of the best indie games ever made... I am still a fan and glad I spent the $5 on Kero Blaster! Definitely worth the price for a single player offline action platformer.
